Out of the blue, actress Anna loses her job at a small municipal theater. Having just been on stage, she now finds herself in the dreariness of the local job center. At the insistence of her theater-enthusiastic caseworker, she takes over the management of an acting course for eight long-term unemployed people who are difficult to place. Despite enormous resistance to the compulsory training program, the frustrated lone fighters increasingly form a close-knit group with whom Anna stages Antigone. Surprisingly, the participants' private dramas become more and more turbulent and Anna also experiences a new beginning that she hadn't expected.

Unknown assailants threaten the life of British scientist Dr. Ronald Fergusson. Only by chance does the attempt to shoot him in the street fail. Dr. Robert Siedler is an experienced forensic psychologist who is asked to prepare an expert opinion for the mentally disturbed ex-alcoholic Friedhelm Knecht, who has been in custody for a long time. According to his expert assessment, he is in favor of releasing the offender, whereupon Knecht is released from prison. Shortly afterwards, however, there is a murder in which the evidence points to Knecht as the perpetrator. The suspect goes on the run and when the case causes a stir in the press, Robert is quickly found to be the scapegoat and blamed for the murder. Robert himself is shocked: has he misjudged a case for the first time? Or was his expert opinion justified and is Knecht innocent?
